Manqoba Mngqithi comments on imminent Royal AM exit

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi says KZN teams will be poorer with one less club should Royal AM’s membership be cancelled.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor, who was born in Umzimkhulu, has always been vocal about the growing number of topflight outfits in the province and sees the pending exit as a huge loss.

Royal AM will learn their fate on Thursday when the board of governors – represented by all PSL clubs – vote on the recommendation by the Exco to terminate the status of a team that has been embroiled in controversy.

Mngqithi shares his thoughts about the saga.

"I think it's just unfortunate and I don't think we have control in that and sometimes with things I don't have control on, I just accept fate because the reality is it was always nice to have so many teams in the province and it could have been nicer with Durban City coming into the PSL when we still have so many teams because that's the only possibility and a better chance for KZN teams to even win the championship one day,” said Mnqithi.

“The travelling of these coastal teams is always the biggest challenge because if you look at how many teams are based in Gauteng, it always poses a lot of difficulty for these teams and most of these teams don't even have the same level of sponsorship.

“So, if we've got a lot of games that are played in and around KZN it gives a little bit of a breather to use the grant and whatever little sponsorship we have to be able to sustain yourself and be able to get one or two players that can make you to do well. And it's unfortunate when you lose one, the way we are most likely going to lose one."

Meanwhile, Arrows dropped points at home in their Betway Premiership clash against Chippa United, playing to a goalless draw.

The coach believes they were not potent enough upfront.

"The second half, I think it was very good, we showed a different face today where probably in 45 minutes we dominated the game, good rest defence, good moments in the final third,” the coach added.

“Unfortunate not to have scored anything and unfortunate to go home with a draw because I think I saw one save from my goalkeeper. I may be wrong but I think that's what I saw. The game was in the opposition's half a lot but unfortunately, we did not capitalise on the chances we got."
