Manuel Pellegrini's record-breaking reign at Real Betis continues to dazzle

Manuel Pellegrini is rewriting the history books at Real Betis.

The Chilean boss has steered the Seville-based side to European qualification for four straight seasons, lifted a Copa del Rey trophy, and guided them to the quarter-finals of a continental competition.

But last Sunday, against Leganes, the man nicknamed "The Engineer" added another feather to his cap, becoming the manager with the most top-flight wins in the club's storied history.

Pellegrini's 79 victories in 180 La Liga matches at the helm of the Green-and-Whites have eclipsed the 78 wins Lorenzo Serra Ferrer managed in 198 games during his tenure.

The Chilean has long since left other Betis legends in his wake, Ferenc Szusza's 46 wins in 130 matches, Luis Cid Carriega's 41 in 101, and Pepe Mel's 36 in 110, all of whom round out the top five most successful managers in Spain's top division for the club from the City of the Sun.

To overtake Serra Ferrer as the manager with the most games in charge of Real Betis across all competitions, Pellegrini will need to stick around for next season. He's currently clocked 241 matches, with at least 253 expected by the end of this campaign, and potentially 256 if the team reach the Conference League final.

Serra Ferrer, by contrast, sat in the dugout 263 times across his two spells. But when it comes to total wins, Pellegrini is closing in fast on his predecessor.

Across all official competitions, Pellegrini has racked up 114 victories with Real Betis. Serra Ferrer's haul stands at 116, meaning just three more wins this term would see the Chilean smash yet another club record. These are staggering figures for a manager approaching five consecutive seasons at the helm, and they're propelling him up the all-time managerial rankings in Spanish football.

Take his La Liga record across all clubs he's managed in Spain: 512 games. That places Pellegrini sixth in the competition's history, trailing only Luis Aragones (756), Javier Irureta (612), Miguel Munoz (608), Ernesto Valverde (547), and Victor Fernandez (544). In recent days, he's overtaken Joaquín Caparros (510) and Javier Clemente (511).

Pellegrini also sits among the top six managers for La Liga wins. His 246 triumphs are bettered only by Irureta (259), Valverde (260), Diego Simeone (308), Munoz (323), and Aragones (344). Across 14 seasons in Spain's top flight, 12 of them full campaigns, putting him sixth for completed seasons in La Liga history, The Engineer keeps shattering records and cementing his legacy.

These are numbers that once transformed Villarreal and Malaga, and now they're working their magic at Real Betis.

Manuel Pellegrini himself reflected on his milestone after the Leganes win, saying, "It's a privilege to be part of this club's history. The players deserve the credit, they've bought into the vision and delivered on the pitch." Meanwhile, Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, speaking to local media last year, had praised his successor: "Manuel's doing an extraordinary job. He's taken Betis to another level."

The buzz is real, and the faithful at the Benito Villamarín are loving every minute of it.
