The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have announced a massive increase in prize money ahead of the start of the 2022 Total Energies Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
The total prize money has increased from USD 975 000 (approximately R16-million) to a whopping USD 2 400 000 (close to R40-million), effective for the showpiece set to kick off in Morocco this evening.
Among the favourites to lift the title are 11-time winners Nigeria, South Africa and Cameroon, and the announcement that the winners will now pocket USD 500 000 (approx. R8-million), instead of USD 200 000 (approx. R3.3-million) will surely add to the desire to go all the way.
"In line with the promise by CAF to make womens football in Africa globally competitive, the President of CAF Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced an increase 150% in prize money for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2022," read a statement from CAF.
The tournament will kick-off this evening with hosts Morocco taking on debutants Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, while the Super Falcons and Banyana Banyana square off in arguably the pick of the group stage fixtures, on Monday.
Senegal and Uganda complete Group A, with Zambia, Tunisia and Togo joining Cameroon in Group B, while Burundi and Botswana complete Group C alongside South Africa and Nigeria.
Another groundbreaking announcement from CAF on Saturday will see Video Assistant Referee be used during all 28 matches of the tournament - a first in the women's game on the continent.
