With a 1-0 win in the first leg, Pirates advanced with a 1-0 aggregate score, edging closer to their dream of continental glory.
This marks the Sea Robbers' return to the last four of the prestigious competition for the first time since 2013, when they narrowly lost to the dominant Al Ahly in the final. Their next challenge comes in the form of Egyptian side Pyramids, whom they will face in the upcoming two-legged semifinals.
Pirates' approach throughout the quarterfinal tie was notably pragmatic yet effective. Under the guidance of their coach, the team's defensive structure, with three central defenders - Nkosinathi Sibisi, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and Tapelo Xoki - formed a resolute foundation. This defensive discipline was crucial, mirroring their strategy from high-profile matches such as their 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the domestic league just last month.
While the Sea Robbers didn't shy away from a defensive stance, they still found opportunities to be offensive, particularly through their quick and precise transitions. Wingers Deon Hotto and Deano van Rooyen, who offered width and pace on the flanks, were key in unsettling the opposition. Hotto came close to breaking the deadlock early, firing a venomous shot that had MC Alger's goalkeeper, Toufik Moussaoui, scrambling, only for the ball to drift wide of the target.
In the middle, Thalente Mbatha proved pivotal, showcasing his skill as a dynamic ball-carrier. His runs from midfield helped unlock some promising positions, though clear-cut chances remained scarce for the Pirates.
MC Alger dominated possession for significant periods in the first half, but despite their control, they couldn't penetrate the Pirates' organized defense. Their attempts at breaking through were thwarted by the Sea Robbers' disciplined shape, forcing the Algerians to resort to set-pieces as their main avenue for threat.
In the second half, Pirates adopted a more patient and strategic approach, waiting for the right moments to exploit any spaces in the Algerian defense. Their defensive compactness remained a cornerstone, and they were content to stifle MC Alger's advances, ensuring they couldn't break through.
Off the pitch, Pirates supporters injected some drama of their own, turning the tables on the Algerians by shining lasers into the eyes of MC Alger players-a tactic often seen in North African stadiums. The incident sparked tension, with frustrated Algerian fans engaging in a skirmish among themselves.
With their continental aspirations alive, Pirates are also pursuing a historic quadruple. Already having secured the MTN8 trophy, they remain in contention for the domestic championship and will meet Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup semifinals this Sunday. The Sea Robbers are undoubtedly on a thrilling trajectory, with history beckoning.
