The 21-year-old defender has filled a significant gap in Carlo Ancelotti's lineup, allowing the coach to move Aurelien Tchouameni back to his preferred midfield position after Eduardo Camavinga's injury.
The change has proved pivotal for Madrid, strengthening their midfield and relieving Tchouameni of defensive responsibilities. With the Frenchman back in the centre of the park, he can focus on anchoring the midfield - a position where Madrid has struggled this season.
Tchouameni, who injured his ankle in the Milan clash on November 5, has now returned to full training. He could feature in the squad for Madrid's upcoming match against Athletic Bilbao on December 4.
His recovery is a crucial boost for Ancelotti, who has been dealing with a number of key injuries, including to Vinicius Junior, Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Camavinga.
Had Asencio not stepped up, Ancelotti would have faced a major dilemma. Without the young defender's solid performances, Tchouameni might have been forced back into the defence, leaving Madrid with an unsettled midfield.
Ancelotti has praised Asencio for his impact on the team, saying after the win against Leganes, "He will fight for a starting spot because in the games he's played, he's deserved it.
"He's been excellent on the ball and well-positioned without it. He's performed well and earned the chance to compete for a place."
Asencio's seamless integration into the team has not only strengthened the defence alongside Antonio Rudiger, but it has also allowed Tchouameni to shine in midfield.
This tactical shift has given Madrid much-needed balance, especially as they head into a challenging December schedule, which includes a match every three days and five consecutive away games, starting with a trip to San Mames.
For Ancelotti, Asencio's rise has brought vital stability to a squad under pressure, helping them face a tough stretch of fixtures with renewed confidence.
