Fermin Lopez, a 20-year-old sensation, has been making waves at FC Barcelona, ever since he secured a spot in Coach Xavi Hernandez's selection for the USA pre-season tour, Lopez's meteoric rise has been nothing short of astonishing.
Lopez's latest feat is his call-up to the Spain U-21 squad, marking a significant milestone in his budding career. He could make his international debut in the upcoming UEFA Euro qualifier against Uzbekistan, a testament to his rapid ascent.
In an interview with SPORT, Lopez reflected on his journey of growth and development at Barcelona, underscoring his unwavering commitment to reaching the pinnacle of the sport.
Discussing his great start to the current La Liga season (six appearances scoring one goal), Lopez confessed to his unexpected rise, fuelled by his unrelenting dedication:
"I didn't anticipate the leap to the first team from my earlier experiences, but I've always embraced hard work and effort since childhood, and now, the reward has finally arrived."
While the footballing world watches Lopez's great showing at Barcelona, it's intriguing to note that he could have donned the white jersey of Real Madrid. When questioned about this, Lopez candidly revealed his allegiance:
"Real Madrid inquired about me at one point, but I've always been a fervent Barcelona supporter. My father shielded me from the inquiries made by various clubs. However, when Barcelona came calling, I made my choice without a second thought."
Nevertheless, Lopez's journey at Barcelona has not been devoid of challenges. He disclosed the hardships he encountered, particularly during his early days at La Masia:
"I arrived alone, separated from my family, and resided at La Masia. Initially, it was tough, particularly at night when you miss your loved ones. But at La Masia, they treated me exceptionally well, and my teammates shared the same struggles. We leaned on each other for support. Although I missed my family, I cherished living my dream. I wouldn't trade it for anything."
During his formative years, Lopez shared the trenches with his close companion, Gavi, giving insight into the stark contrast between Gavi on and off the field:
"Gavi and I have lived together at La Masia, spending most of our time together, except when I'm at university. On the pitch, he's a different person, driven by impulsiveness and an unquenchable competitive spirit. But off the field, he's an amiable, regular guy. He's no troublemaker; he simply gives his all in games and training. Sometimes he tells me, 'Fer, I can't believe I got myself into that situation.' That's just who he is, and that's precisely why he's achieved what he has."
Lopez also emphasized the warm welcome he received from the first-team players, affirming his sense of belonging in the dressing room:
"I already feel like one of them because of the way my teammates have embraced me."
As Fermin Lopez continues to make strides, Barcelona fans await the next chapter in this promising star's career.
