Siyabonga Nomvete says Peter Shalulile is a worthy player to break his goal record

Former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs great Siyabonga “Bhele” Nomvete has praised Sundowns and Namibia international striker Peter Shalulile, who is edging closer to Nomvete’s record of 129 goals.

Shalulile scored his 100th goal for Sundowns earlier this week during the 2-0 win over AmaZulu and is now on 127 goals, just two goals shy of equaling Nomvete’s record.

He says, Shalulile, a former Highlands Park striker, is a worthy player to break this record and sees him taking it further.

“I’m saying nothing will stop that because he’s a hard worker, he’s been pushing so hard, he’s been fighting to be successful in this country. Remember, he’s not a South African player, he’s a foreign player but he performs, I believe because anywhere you go, even me if I go to Europe, I’m a foreigner myself. I need to perform and make my name big there but I won’t complain,” Nomvete said.

“He’s doing well at Sundowns; whatever happens will happen. I can’t stop that because I’m a football fan myself. He has a lot of opportunities to do whatever he can; nothing will stop that, he’s a hard worker, he can continue and go further and further up until someone will come and break another record.”

Nomvete also played for Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu in the PSL era.

In less than 10 years in South African football’s topflight division, Shalulile is breaking this record.

If goals from the National Fist Division (NFD) where he finished as the top goal scorer were to be counted, he’s long passed the record.

Nomvete is proud of his records and career in the PSL and is not surprised that it’s taken this long to match his record.

“No, it doesn’t surprise me because I’m a simple person and ever since I play football, I never have that anger that someone is taking my things, you know but what I wanna tell you, I’m proud of my career,” he added.

“I've achieved a lot of trophies, nobody has won trophies the way I won it. They can say anything they want because I'm the first player in this country to win five trophies in one season in PSL.

“We will get more brilliant strikers especially in the development because it starts in school. Once we focus on bringing back those competitive in schools, the strikers will come."
