Sipho Chaine speaks on incredible journey to being Pirates No.1

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has tried to make sense of his trajectory from playing second fiddle at previous clubs to now being first choice.

It’s expected that if things stay as they are, the 28-year-old will be part of the Bafana Bafana squad at the AFCON in Morocco.

Chaine admits his rise was a surprise to him too.

''I think for me, for a change there's a different perspective on how I see it. From 2013, throughout my goalkeeping career I have always been second best, honestly speaking. I don't know how God maneuvered this journey, but throughout my goalkeeping career - I have always trusted in Him,'' said Chaine.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United shot stopper is one of the first group of players to feature in the reserve league, now called the DStv Diski Challenge, back in 2013.

Chaine said even as a youngster then he was unsure how his career would play out.

''Looking back from 2013 breaking into the Diski Challenge when it started, I have always been second best. In even the PSL I would be No.2 or No.3, I am amazed for God to use Pirates to put me here, I have never been in this position before. It is all by the grace of God,'' added Chaine.

The goalkeeper did not want to get ahead of himself discussing being a regular in the Bafana squad but only spoke about “improving” on what he brings to the table.

Chaine also weighed in on his experience leading the Carling All-Stars team at the weekend to beat Magesi 3-0 at Orlando Stadium.

''I think for me, even during the week I was thinking about it. The direction South Africa football is taking, just looking at the All Star team, the players came out to show the quality of talent that the country has. The coach saw how talented these boys are, in just three days of training together. I think it is all up to them on how much they want of their football career, maybe to play in Europe and maybe to play in top leagues in the world,'' he expressed.
