New Zealand claimed their first Test victory in India for 36 years when they secured a comfortable eight-wicket win in Bengaluru on Sunday.
It is only the third time the Black Caps have beaten India away from home, after wins in Nagpur in 1969 and Mumbai in 1988, with victory giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
The tourists, having bowled India out for just 46 in their first innings, needed 107 to clinch a memorable triumph.
India's chances of turning around their fortunes were boosted when Jasprit Bumrah removed Tom Latham for a duck with just the second ball of the day.
A second wicket fell with New Zealand on 35 courtesy of Bumrah again, trapping Devon Conway lbw, but that was as good as it got for the Indians.
