Outgoing Proteas coach Mark Boucher will be back in the Indian Premier League next season after being confirmed as the new coach of five-time champions Mumbai Indians.
Cricket South Africa last week made the shock announcement that Boucher would be stepping down as coach of the senior men's national team after the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia.
The 45-year-old, who holds the record for most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in Test cricket, had been appointed as Proteas boss in 2019 and signed a contract until 2023 but will cut that short after 11 Test, 12 ODIs and 23 T20 victories at the helm.
"Mumbai Indians announce the appointment of South African legend, the record-holding wicket-keeper Mark Boucher as their Head Coach starting with IPL 2023," read a statement from the IPL giants on Friday.
Boucher will begin his tenure when the new season is scheduled to start in March next year, and he has welcomed the challenge with the Mumbai-based franchise.
It is an honor and privilege to be appointed as Head Coach of MI. Their history and achievements as a franchise clearly put them up there as one of the most successful sporting franchises in all of world sport," he told the MI website.
"I look forward to the challenge and respect the need for results. Its a strong unit with great leadership and players. I look forward to adding value to this dynamic unit."
