Rain delayed the start and ultimately reduced the match to just 11 overs per innings, with the visitors having won the toss and sent South Africa in to bat first at SuperSport Park, where the second clash is set to also take place this afternoon (14h00).
David Miller top scored with 48 off 22 balls as South Africa posted a total of 131/8, but the West Indians' aggression from the onset saw them register a three-wicket victory from 10.3 overs.
Magala, who claimed impressive figures of 3/21 from two overs, explained that conditions were unpredictable due to the reduced amount of overs, and they effectively had to just go with the flow.
"I think to be honest, it's a bit chaotic. 11 overs, you know, anything can go. But we assessed the situation in terms of how the pitch was playing and how they bowled," said Magala.
"They used their short balls pretty well and the ball was very uneven, so, kind of, just on the fly, decisions were made and we just went with it, and backed it.
"I think a shortened game is a tough one to really predict and plan [for], in terms of having a set pattern or way of going about it as you would in a T20.
"As I said, having a shortened game is a bit chaotic. Imagine if there was a 5-over game, you know what I mean? How would you plan for it? So, you have to learn on the fly and try your best to adapt to the situation."
With a more promising weather forecast on Sunday, the Proteas will be looking to bounce back to level the series ahead of the third and final T20 at Wanderers on Tuesday, which will conclude the West Indies' tour of SA.
