Karabo Meso reacts to her gsport School Sports Star of the Year nomination

Proteas Women’s young wicket-keeper-batter Karabo Meso says her gsport-19 nomination serves as an inspiration to all the young athletes who look up to her.

The 16-year-old has been nominated in the School Sports Star of the Year category, alongside South African youth rower Danelia Price-Hughes and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies winger Katleho Malebana.

Meso made headlines when she made her debut for the senior women’s national team in the T20 series against Sri Lanka in March and, speaking to SABC Sport, Meso is grateful for the recognition from South Africa’s leading women in sport platform.

''Being recognised by Gsport and around the world as the youngest athlete in cricket, it really means a lot. This speaks to hard work and inspiring other young athletes out there to keep pushing,'' said Meso.

With the Proteas preparing for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup to be hosted in the United Arab Emirates in October, Meso says being called up to that squad would be a dream come true and highlight of her career.

''My ambitions with the Proteas this year, I think it will be such a great experience to be a part of the world cup squad to be played in UAE, that would be the highlight of my cricket journey,'' added Meso.

The teenager further explains how she aims to put her name out there, should she be selected for the World Cup.

''I think, I will stick with the same basics, like I did at the under-19 world cup - just being myself, being expressive when I play and in just how I carry that bat,'' Meso expressed.

Meso also shared her experience being the youngest player in the senior team, and the benefits of being surrounded by experienced campaigners.

''I would say the whole team, how they carry themselves. But especially our captain Laura Wolvaardt, our captain, the way she carries herself on and off the field, and just how she cares about the team,'' she concluded.
