CSK languish at the bottom of the IPL 2025 standings halfway through the league stage, with just two wins from seven matches.
"We aren't getting the start that we want as a batting unit," said Dhoni.
"We keep losing wickets at the wrong time to some extent. One of the reasons could be that the Chennai wicket is slightly on the slower side.
"Out of the first 5-6 games we have played, we've played more games over there. When we play outside, the start as a batting unit slightly better. Maybe we need to play on wickets that are slightly better, and it'll give the batters confidence to play their shots."
Despite a morale-boosting five-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday - chasing down 167 - their overall form has been patchy.
Home form, in particular, has been a cause for concern. CSK have played four matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium and lost three.
Their average score at home is a modest 141, compared to a much healthier 181 in away games.
The low point came in their clash with Kolkata Knight Riders, where they were restricted to 103/9 - their lowest ever total at Chepauk.
Dhoni also criticised the team's lacklustre starts with the bat and their failure to contain opposition batters during the Powerplay overs.
