Proteas coach Shukri Conrad hails 'special' Test series win in Bangladesh

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad feels the Test series victory in Bangladesh will instill plenty of belief in the squad ahead of the home summer of matches.

Conrad's charges completely dominated both Test matches against the Tigers for the Proteas' first series win in the longest format in the sub-continent since beating Sri Lanka in 2014.

The tour also saw visiting batters come out of their shell in the longest format and hitting major milestones with three players - Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder - scoring maiden Test centuries.

Conrad said: "On so many levels it was a special win and so important for this group, especially what lies ahead over the next couple of months which makes it even more exciting.

"Just the belief that it instils in this group, how we went about our business and the growth that you see within them on a daily basis."

Conrad credited the team's success in Bangladesh to the preparation they had done on a week long camp prior to the squad's departure.

The Proteas trained in "extreme conditions" in Pretoria and the coaching staff also worked on the team's mindset to back their skills in unfamiliar conditions.

The Test mentor added: "We prepared really well. We created extreme conditions in Pretoria. And I think we kept talking around the mentality that we want this group to have, for them to back what they've got, to show their character in everything we do.

"You must want to create an environment where it's okay to make mistakes. But we are still going to get tested in bigger ways going forward.

"For South African teams, when we go to Pakistan and India next year, I think we take a lot of confidence from this result."

The Proteas now face Sri Lanka and Pakistan in four Test matches at home, starting later this month, with three wins needed to ensure a place in the World Test Championship final at Lord's in June next year.

Conrad is delighted that the team's destiny is in their own hands as they look ahead to the first Test against Sri Lanka in Durban on 27 November.

"I can tell you now that the table is going to be topsy-turvy and there's so many permutations," Conrad said. "I'm just glad that it's in our hands.

"It's all about the first Test against Sri Lanka in Durban now and then we'll take it from there. But first a nice little break for all these guys."
