Proteas depart for Test series in Bangladesh after 'brilliant' training camp

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad has declared himself satisfied with the squad's preparations ahead of the two-match Test series that starts in Bangladesh next Monday.

The national squad wrapped up a three-day training camp at the Tuks University ahead of their departure for what will be the Proteas' first Test series in the sub-continent since going to Pakistan in 2021.

The Proteas will not play any warm-up fixture ahead of the first Test in Dhaka but Conrad insists his team will be sufficiently prepared for whatever conditions they may face.

"I think the last few days have been absolutely brilliant, with really proper graft put in by everyone and the okes will leave here prepared," Conrad said.

"I don't think any warm-up game would have made any difference. Now it's just about acclimatising.

"The bulk of the guys have been in conditions similar to what we're going to experience in Bangladesh."

The Proteas mentor stated that he has not yet finalised the balance of his starting line-up for the opening Test with David Bendingham touted to move up to number four in the batting order in place of the injured Temba Bavuma.

Conrad also basically confirmed that all-rounder Wiaan Mulder will be in the team regardless of conditions, but could be a second or third seamer in the final XI.

Senuran Muthusamy has been included in the squad as a third frontline spinner and could be shoe-horned into the starting team alongside fellow slow-bowlers Keshav Maharaj and Dane Piedt.

Conrad said: "We will wait until we get over there (to make a call on the line-up). It will be determined around the balance of our attack ... if we play three seamers and two spinners or two seamers and three spinners.

"Going into the winter season there, the wickets could be slightly more seamer friendly, but generally in Dhaka they want it to spin anyway."

The first Test will be played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium before the series concludes in Chittagong with the second match set to start on 29 October.
