Proteas outplayed by New Zealand in ICC Champions Trophy semifinal

The Proteas were outplayed by New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal with the Kiwis winning the contest by 50 runs in Lahore on Wednesday.

The Black Caps posted a mammoth total of 362-6 thanks to twin centuries from Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson before restricting the Proteas to 312-9 in their 50 overs.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss on a good batting pitch and, after the loss of opener Will Young (21), Ravindra and Williamson took control of the innings.

The duo put on 164 for the second wicket with Ravindra eventually going on to score 108 from 101 balls while Williamson showed all his class in compiling 102 off 94 deliveries.

With the platform set, the rest of the New Zealand batting order had the license to play with freedom and Daryl Mitchell (49 off 37 balls) and Glenn Phillips (49 not out from 27 balls) gave the team good late impetus.

Lungi Ngidi was far and way the best Proteas bowler on show, the seamer mixing up his pace well to finish with figures of 3-72 in his 10 overs which have been better had he not had three dropped catches off his bowling.

The Proteas lost Ryan Rickelton (17) in the fifth over but skipper Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen added 105 for the second wicket at a run-a-ball.

The introduction of spin proved to be the undoing for the Proteas as Santner's left-armers produced figures of 3-43 in his 10 overs while fellow slow-bowler Michael Bracewell took 1-53.

David Miller provided late power-hitting to be 100 not out off 67 balls, his seventh ODI hundred, but the the game was already lost at this point.

The Proteas once again fall short at an ICC tournament with New Zealand set to take on India in the ICC Champions Trophy final in Dubai on Sunday.
