Proteas suffer injury blow after Nandre Burger is ruled out of Test series in Bangladesh

The Proteas have suffered a major blow ahead of the Test tour to Bangladesh later this month after fast bowler Nandre Burger was ruled out due to a back injury.

The left-arm paceman has suffered a "lumbar stress reaction" during the ongoing ODI series against Ireland in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement released by Cricket South Africa (CSA).

The statement further added that Burger will return home immediately to undergo further assessments.

A replacement has not yet been named with Kagiso Rabada, Dane Paterson and Wiaan Mulder the seam bowling options already in the 15-man squad for the two-match series that gets underway in Dhaka on 21 October.

The Proteas also have an injury concern to Tony de Zorzi after the batter injured his knee while fielding during the first ODI against Ireland.

An MRI scan has revealed that De Zorzi suffered a soft tissue injury and has been rested as a precaution for the second ODI on Friday.

The left-handed batter is also in the Test squad and is expected to open the batting with Aiden Markram in the series against Bangladesh.
