Proteas take control at Kingsmead as Sri Lankan batsmen removed for record-low 42

Day two of the first Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Kingsmead, Durban, saw the hosts dominate with the ball.

Resuming their first innings at 80/4, South Africa managed to post 191, with captain Temba Bavuma and Marco Jansen contributing valuable runs. Sri Lanka's Prabath Jayasuriya shone with figures of 5/50.

Sri Lanka's response was historic for all the wrong reasons, as they were bundled out for just 42, their lowest Test score ever, eclipsing the previous mark of 71 against Pakistan in 2002.

The South African bowlers, led by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, needed just 13.5 overs to dismiss the visitors, marking the second shortest Test innings in history.

Jansen finished with phenomenal figures of 7-13.

South Africa began their second innings with a healthy lead of 149 runs. By stumps, they had extended their advantage to 281 runs, reaching 132/3.

Aiden Markram top-scored with 47 before being bowled out by Vishwa Fernando.

Prabath Jayasuriya added two more wickets to his tally, but Sri Lanka face a daunting task as South Africa edge closer to an imposing position.

With three days left, the Proteas hold a commanding position, leaving Sri Lanka needing a miraculous comeback to avoid defeat.
