Proteas wilt as West Indies sweep series 3-0 in Caribbean

South Africa slumped to a 3-0 series defeat away to the West Indies on the eve of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Already down 2-0 in the series, Sunday's clash in Kingston was about pride for the Proteas. However, after posting 163 on a slow pitch, the hosts chased it down to win by eight wickets to put an exclamation point on the series win.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the visitors were under pressure at 50/4 in the eighth over. Spinner Gudakesh Motie dismissed Quinton de Kock and Matthew Breetzke with his deception.

Captain Rassie van der Dussen and Wiaan Mulder counterpunched, putting together a vital 77 runs off 49 balls before Mulder holed out. Van der Dussen tried to bat with the tail as they limped along, reaching 163/7.

With nothing to lose, West Indies openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles came out swinging for the fences. Charles reached his 50 in just 20 balls, taking a particular liking to Gerland Coetzee's pace. They accrued 92 runs in just 6.4 overs before Charles holed out at deep mid-wicket for a match-winning 69 of just 26.

Captain King continued to work over the Proteas attack until Coetzee got some redemption with a short ball that King edged to de Kock. But Kyle Meyers made sure the hosts sprinted across the finish line, posting a quick-fire 36 that included four sixes.
