Proteas Women ready to move on from World Cup final disappointment

Former Proteas Women captain Suné Luus has declared the team's readiness to kick on following their 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup final defeat to New Zealand.

South Africa have been victims of back-to-back final defeats, after losing to Australia in last year's T20 World Cup final on home soil.

However, a month later, Luus says they are eager to get going again as they welcome England in a three-match T20I series.

"Oh, yeah, obviously it was a great World Cup for us. I think back-to-back finals are something special. We had a bit of time off, just to reflect on everything and obviously we can't change the past and obviously the last couple of weeks just been back, running hard,” Luus said.

“It's gonna be a tough series, England is a very good side. So, I've just been preparing for the series and looking forward.”

Following last year's final defeat in February, the Proteas Women were subjected to a six-month hiatus, leaving the players to grow somewhat rusty before they returned to action in a 3-0 series defeat to Pakistan in September.

Luus is confident this time around, they can build on the momentum of reaching another final.

"Last time I think we had a couple of months break which was a bit frustrating obviously having that momentum we gained at the final and the excitement that was around the country. We wanted to play more cricket but unfortunately not getting that opportunity,” she added.

“It's only been a month now and we're playing a team like England so that's awesome. I don't think it's any different, it's still cricket but I think the team is still in good spirits maybe just the memories of the World Cup are a bit more fresh than last year but yeah, it’s just another cricket series and looking to win this one as well."

Having batted in only three innings through the entire competition in the United Arab Emirates in October, Luus is optimistic she can find form against England.

"Um, I hope so, I think always when you get the opportunity to bat you wanna contribute as much as you can, given the opportunities as well. There's a lot of youngsters coming in so we'll see what happens this series but obviously every time I get this opportunity, the goal is to score as many rounds as I can."
