Ryan Rickelton, Dane Paterson come into Proteas team for 2nd Test against Sri Lanka

Ryan Rickelton and Dane Paterson have replaced injured duo Wiaan Mulder and Gerald Coetzee in the Proteas team for the second Test against Sri Lanka, starting in Gqeberha on Thursday.

The selection of middle-order batter Rickelton bolsters the Proteas order with the hosts opting to go into the match with only four frontline bowlers - three seamers and a spinner.

Rickelton has played in seven Test matches so far in his career, including both in the previous series in Bangladesh, and averages just above 22 with a highest score of 42.

Paterson will join Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen as one the three frontline seamers with Keshav Maharaj the specialist spinner in the line-up.

The 35-year-old Paterson has only played five Test matches since making his debut in the longest format against England in 2020.

He has taken 12 wickets in his five appearances at an average of just over 36 while his best bowling figures are 3-39.

The Proteas will be looking for victory which will give them a 2-0 series win and edge them closer to a place in the World Test Championship final.
