McKenzie, who played in 58 Tests and 64 ODIs, has extensive coaching experience having worked with the Proteas, Bangladesh and in the IPL previously.
Ashley De Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, said: "McKenzie will bring in vital, in-depth insights about the South African conditions to help Sri Lankan players adapt to the challenge."
The first Test between the Proteas and Sri Lanka starts on 27 November in Durban with the series concluding at St George's Park in Gqeberha with second Test beginning on 5 December.
The series is vital in the context of the World Test Championship (WTC) with both teams still in with an opportunity to reach the final at Lord's in June next year.
