Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs hit maiden Test tons as Proteas dominate in Bangladesh

Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs both scored maiden Test centuries to help the Proteas to a dominant 307-2 on the opening day of the second and final Test against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

Opener De Zorzi batted all day to be 141 not out while Stubbs struck 106 as the pair put on a 201-run partnership for the second wicket.

The Proteas had won the toss on what looked like a good batting pitch and skipper Aiden Markram and De Zorzi were mostly untroubled when they added 69.

Markram though gave it away when on 33 when he needlessly chipped left-arm spinner Taijul Islam to mid-on in what can only be described as a soft dismissal.

Stubbs joined De Zorzi at the crease and the pair safely negotiated the rest of first session as the visitors went into the lunch break on 109-1.

Then duo then batted the entire second session with left-hander De Zorzi bringing up maiden hundred in the longest format off 149 balls just before the tea interval.

The evening session saw Stubbs reach his three-figure score off 194 deliveries that included five fours and three sixes.

The number three batter though did not last long after that though when Islam again made the breakthrough, bowling Stubbs with a ball that kept a touch low to end the 201-run partnership and leave the Proteas on 270-2.

David Bedingham came to the crease and was not content to see out the day but showed positive intent and smashed two huge sixes to be 18 not out off 25 deliveries.

The Proteas will look to get a first innings total in excess of 450 to put the home team under pressure in a contest Bangladesh must win to square the series.
