Chiefs charged for pitch invasion

In a move that sent shockwaves in the football fraternity on Saturday morning, Premier Soccer League prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs - an away team - has been charged for pitch invasion.

This follows ugly scenes at the Danie Craven Stadium last weekend minutes before Amakhosi took on Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 quarterfinals at the compact venue that hosts around 16 000 spectators.

With kick-off delayed by 30 minutes for safety reasons and to allow fans to settle and make their way to the grandstand, several of them ran onto the pitch in the early minutes and had to be restricted by marshals and police.

Tickets for the fixture were sold out hours before the game.

Chiefs officials, including sporting director Kaizer Motaung and his bother Bobby, who is the football manager, had to try calm the situation.

But all hell broke loose at full time as the Glamour Boys triumphed on penalties to advance to the semifinals, where they will now face AmaZulu, when their fans ran onto the pitch and could not be contained by security.

The PSL, bizarrely, have now charged Chiefs even though they were playing away despite having more supporters in the stands.

œI can confirm that charges were preferred against Kaizer Chiefs and they will be appearing before the DC [disciplinary committee] this Thursday to answer to charges of spectator pitch invasion in their match against Stellenbosch FC, Majavu told journalists.

œOnce the DC has been finalised, I will provide you with further details and the outcome therefore - there will be no commentary on this matter until it is finalised.
