Khoza: Why NFD is a hard sell for TV

Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza says even after the major announcement that the Motsepe Foundation will now sponsor the First Division, it™s unlikely that more games will be televised.

The sponsorship will run for the next five years as revealed by founder of the Motsepe Foundation, Patrice Motsepe, although finer details are still to be ironed out.

Speaking to journalists after confirmation that GladAfrica had pulled the plug on backing South Africa™s second-tier ahead of the 2022/23 season, Khoza said he could not guarantee that broadcasters will carry matches live.

"Unfortunately, and Dr [Danny] Jordaan will tell you, as much as SABC has the mandate of dealing with local content, they always talk about the cost involved in producing those matches," said Khoza.

"That's why we have to find a creative way of how to get matches covered, by creating excitement around those matches, because there's a cost-benefit factor that comes into play.

"Hence we are saying to the clubs, 'Make yourself attractive, to make sure that it's campaigning also for the broadcasters - if it's SABC - for them to be able to get more advertisement around those matches, to justify the expense and cost of producing the game."
