Siviwe Mpengesi backs Morgan Mammila as Chippa United coach

Chippa United chairman Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi says he’s not in a hurry to look for a permanent coach, reiterating the current technical team has his full support.

The Chilli Boys sacked Daine Klate last month after only seven DStv Premiership matches and appointed the duo of Morgan Mammila and Siyabulela Gwambi.

Results so far have been satisfactory, with Mpengesi witnessing Chippa beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night to make it three successive wins.

“I’m very much impressed with the type of football that was played here today, and even if they were to lose or draw, personally, I was satisfied,” said Mpengesi.

“We dictated, we were there, we were a top team. So, it was never like we are a small team, so that’s the Chippa United that I’ve been fighting for. And, of course, we are not there yet but we are coming, slowly but surely.”

Mpengesi says the style of play under Mammila, who was initially brought back to the club to be a technical advisor before taking over from Klate, is what he has been yearning for since the start of the season, and he is not looking for a new coach.

“Look, we can’t talk about those things now, you know what I mean? Because the team is doing well. Why do you fix what is not broken? At least this is my project – what you see here is my project,” he added.

“I must nourish it and work – do you know how much I’ve always been criticsed and blamed by South Africa, which is [fine], I don’t complain. What we need to do – let’s do things right, and we are starting to do things right now.”
