Algerian disqualified from judo match after missing weight at Olympic Games

Algerian judoka Messaoud Dris failed to make weight for his Olympic Games judo match against Israel's Tohar Butbul, resulting in his disqualification.

Dris had been scheduled to face Butbul in the opening round of the men's -73kg category at the Champ de Mars Arena in Paris on Monday morning.

However, his failure to make the weight at Sunday's evening weigh-in meant he was removed from the draw and Butbul was allowed to advance to the next stage.

The Israeli Olympic Committee said in a statement: "The Israeli delegation will continue to compete with the Olympic values in mind.

"We believe this kind of behaviour has no place in the world of sport."

It is not the first time an athlete from Algeria - which does not officially recognise the state of Israel - has avoided a match against an Israeli opponent.

At the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, another Algerian judoka, Fethi Nourine, withdrew from his first round match against Mohamed Abdalrasool in order to avoid the possibility of facing Butbul at the next stage.

Nourine and his coach, who issued statements saying they had taken the decision due to support for the Palestinian cause, were subsequently handed 10-year bans by the International Judo Federation (IJF).

Officials at the IJF and the Algerian Olympic Committee were not immediately available for comment.
