The middleweight champion showed great variability in his striking as he outpointed the brash American on his way to another title defence. The judges scored the bout 50-45, 50-45, 49-46 in the Pretoria native's favour.
Round 1
Du Plessis was the busier fighter, throwing several different looks and providing the biggest moment of the round with an overhand right. Three left high kicks barely missed their mark. Strickland only showed his jab.
Round 2
Blood started to flow as the fight opened up. A jab opened up a cur on the bridge of du Plessis’ nose, while a counter drew blood from Strickland's mouth. The South African landed twice as many significant strikes.
Round 3
Strickland increased his output here and his overhands began to land. He showed a good chin, surviving a spinning back fist and elbow from the champion.
Round 4
Du Plessis had the biggest moment of the fight when a huge straight right broke Strickland's nose, sending blood streaming down his face. Smelling victory, the champion pressed forward recklessly, but Strick showed incredible toughness to hang in, even firing some counters.
Round 5
Strickland was brave to hang in as du Plessis again chased the KO win, but to no avail. Nonetheless, having dominated every round, du Plessis new the belt was his at the buzzer.
