Latest on Ludumo Lamati as his mom prepares to visit him in Northern Ireland

Former South African and International Boxing Organisation (IBO) junior featherweight world champion Ludumo Lamati is in a much better state at the hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and in the process of being moved from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to a normal ward.

During an interview at Colin Nathan's Hotbox Gym, his business manager Larry Wainstein of Boxing5 Promotions revealed this to SABC Sport. Lamati was hospitalized after he collapsed in his corner following a 12th-round stoppage loss to Englishman Nick Ball in a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver featherweight title fight at the SSE Arena almost two weeks ago.

"It's some very promising news, each day he improves and gets better. They've taken him out of the induced coma. He's still under medication but he's very alert, he's starting to eat now the normal foods not just on drips," he said.

"He's off the breathing machine, he's breathing on his own and the latest from last night was we are waiting for a bed to open up in a normal ward then we are gonna move him into the normal ward."

Wainstein also revealed that they have been busy, working around the clock organizing a passport and a visa for Lamati’s mom Joyce and his fiancé Cay Chadday, who will soon travel to Belfast to be at his bedside.

"I've been busy for the last two days getting his mother a passport because she didn't have a passport. We got a passport, and his girlfriend Cay has got a passport, we just finished applying for visas to get it sorted. We've got accommodation organised for them and we'll need to go with because obviously it's difficult to send the two of them on their own, so we wanna go."
