Teaming up with Wayde Van Niekerk – the current world record holder in the 400m, the duo are optimistic the relay presents a favourable opportunity for South Africa to clinch a coveted medal.
Both athletes admire Van Niekerk and anticipate that running alongside him in the relay will serve as a source of inspiration, propelling them towards podium success.
Despite the absence of a South African 4x400m relay team at the World Senior Championships in Budapest this past August, Pillay and Nene are determined that such an occurrence will not repeat in Paris.
"We share a strong bond within our community, Nene and I, engaging in conversations that extend beyond the realms of racing despite our competitive roles on the track," said Pillay.
"On race day, we can set aside our camaraderie and compete fiercely against each other. We are confident in our relay team’s prospects, especially with Wayde, and believe this enhances our chances of securing a medal."
Nene echoed Pillay’s sentiments, expressing equal enthusiasm about their prospects for securing a medal in the relay.
"I am thrilled about the upcoming 4x400m relay and the potential accomplishments that lie ahead," Nene told SABC Sport.
"Witnessing the absence of South Africa in the World Championships 4x400m relay this year was disheartening for most of us.
"Comparing our team to others in the event, you’d see that we stand out, either surpassing or matching the capabilities of athletes from powerhouses like the USA and Jamaica.
"It feels like we’re all on the same page now, sharing a common goal in the relay. Personally, my excitement is focused on this more than anything else.
"I sincerely hope we can kick-start our preparations, train diligently, and secure qualification for Paris. Our aim is to compete fiercely for that coveted gold medal."
