The 29-year-old, who tied the knot with his university sweetheart, Monique, last year, is diligently preparing to excel in both the sand-pit and on the track, aiming for a double victory. Hailing from Kwa-Zulu Natal, the athlete was honoured with the title of Athletics South Africa (ASA) Sportsman of the year with a Disability at the annual awards ceremony held in Johannesburg.
Mhlongo, expressing his commitment, shared with SABC Sport that he is gearing up to compete in multiple events at the Games, making a significant year in his career.
''It is a massive year, it is the Paralympics game year. What I can say is that I'm in the form of my life, compared to last year - this year we're leaving nothing to chance, so we are as prepared as we have ever been. You can expect not just a gold but definitely a world record to go with,'' said Mhlongo.
Mhlongo acknowledges the crucial support he receives from his wife, Monique, emphasizing her role as a vital system that significantly contributes to his success in athletics.
''I must say as an athlete you need a support system that stays with you through it all,'' added Mhlongo.
If luck smiles upon Mhlongo, he could return with up to four medals, as he plans to participate in four events at the global sporting games in Paris. His determination to showcase his worth is stronger than ever.
''So the event we will be participating in in Paris will be the 100 and 200 long jump, and potentially just the high jump because it is the last event of the competition. You know what they say, a happy athlete is a dangerous athlete,'' he concluded.
Sports, being a short-term career, has led Mhlongo to pursue a role as a financial consultant in a prominent company. He advocates for aspiring athletes to not sorely depend on sports and emphasizes the importance of seeking education concurrently.
