Nkosikhona Mhlakwana sacrifices the Comrades for Two Oceans Marathon

South African long-distance runner Nkosikhona Mhlakwana has decided to forgo the Comrades Marathon this year to focus on the Two Oceans.

Often described as one of the most scenic races in the country the Two Oceans Marathon is scheduled for 6 April in Cape Town.

Speaking to SABC Sport Mhlakwana insists he is confident about his chances in the 56km ultra-marathon.

"Yeah, 2025 is now, there's no turning back, there's no 2024 anymore. So, I'm happy that by God everything went accordingly, I'm still alive, I still have to test my dreams so this is like the first year in my running, I've told myself like that,” Mhlakwana said.

“So, I remember last time before Comrades when we were speaking about me moving back to the short distances, so, this is the first year of myself trying something new, trying something that I knew that I'll be doing by this time of the year or by this time of life.

“So, I'm still scared, it is scary, it's a tough decision that I've taken, you can see how running is in South Africa, so at this point in time, it's all about focus. Here is the big race of my first step coming in April, Two Oceans Marathon."

Mhlakwana shared with the national broadcaster that his preparations for the Two Oceans Marathon began last year, and he continues to push himself harder with each passing day.

"The preparations are right on the way, today I'm just coming from my 35-killometre, a long run. I'm even feeling sorry for myself, I'm already losing weight, in December I was 62, 63kg, and at this moment I'm already 59 [kg]. So, I'm asking myself what I will be weighing when the race comes. So, I'm just scared."
