Pieter Coetze ready to become the new face of South African swimming

With South African swimming icon Chad Le Clos sidelined by injury and approaching the end of his remarkable career, rising star Pieter Coetze is poised to carry the baton and become the next big name in local swimming.

Coetze, who turns 21 next month, is eager to embrace the spotlight and establish himself as the face of South African swimming - beginning with the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, set to take place from 11 July to 3 August.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Coetze revealed that he has been preparing for this moment his entire life - a moment where the nation will look to him as a leading and influential figure in the sport.

''I love it, it is such a big privilege for me to even have people talk about me like that. I embrace it, I think my time  has come and I have been waiting for it. When the time comes for me to race I don't let the pressure get to me. But it is a privilege to be seen in that light,'' said Coetze.

The Tuks Sport swimmer is confident in his ability to handle the pressure that comes with being South Africa’s leading man in the pool.

He remains determined to deliver when it matters most and fully understands the expectations resting on his shoulders.

''I am ready, like I said I am so blessed at this point. It is something I have always wanted since I was young. I am happy with this kind of pressure,'' added Coetze.

The Rustenburg-born swimmer delivered one of the standout performances at the recently concluded national championships in Gqeberha, securing qualification for the World Championships in impressive fashion by winning five events.

He was overjoyed with his achievement.

Although an injury has ruled Chad le Clos out of competing for South Africa at the World Championships in July, he will still join the traveling squad, offering support and serving as a motivational speaker for the swimmers representing the country. His presence is especially inspiring for Coetze, who looks up to le Clos as a role model and is excited about the opportunity to travel to Singapore alongside him.

Coetze, a former Hoerskool Rustenburg learner who completed his matric at Cornwall College in Tshwane, delivered South Africa’s only medal at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar, last year - claiming bronze in the 200m backstroke.

He later reflected on the experience of competing at his first major international championships in 2024.

Heading into his second World Aquatics Championships, Coetze approaches the event with greater experience and confidence, aiming to turn his previous bronze medal into gold this July.

''That is obviously my goal and I will be using my experience going into these Championships. Just remembering the things I have learnt before, everyone is going to be there, but I trust myself and believe that I will be on the podium again,'' he concluded.
