Udeme Okon sets his sights on claiming his first senior national title in Potchefstroom

World under-20 400m champion Udeme Okon made a dream start to his debut at the National Senior Championships by cruising to victory in his men’s 400m heat 47.32.

The 19-year-old Florida High School learner from Roodepoort has emerged as the favourite to claim the national title in his first year at senior level.

Okon lived up to expectations with a strong showing in his opening race at the Puk McArthur Stadium on Thursday and told SABC Sport that he was pleased with his performance as he now shifts his focus to winning his maiden senior title.

"The vibe is nice. The objective is to show everyone that I'm here to compete, that I'm fit, and ultimately to win the title.

"For now, I'm just waiting to qualify for the final," said an enthusiastic Okon.

The defending champion, Lythe Pillay, is absent from the National Championships as he is set to compete in the Diamond League in China on Saturday.

Although Okon expressed that he would have liked the opportunity to race against him, he fully understands Pillay’s decision not to be in the North West province.

"I'm not in control of that decision, maybe I'll meet him and race against him in Europe. I want to race people like Pillay when they're fully fit," said Okon confidently.

The World Under-20 silver medallist in the 4x400m relay has emerged as the frontrunner for the national title, ahead of two-time champion Zakithi Nene, and is showing impressive composure under pressure.

The junior national champion has come to the North West province with one clear goal: to win the national title. At just 19 years old, he gave up his December break to prepare, and to put himself in a strong position for victory, and now, his moment has arrived.
