Athletics South Africa's (ASA) attempts to hold the first annual awards failed to materialize due to logistical issues, president James Moloi told SABC Sport.

ASA had initially committed to staging their inaugural awards ceremony today but South African athletes must now wait until January next year to get recognition from the federation.

"We just postponed them [awards] until next year because of other logistics. So we decided to say, no, we can't rush this awards. Actually, a lot of people didn't know about the awards, it's only us," Moloi said.

"But we said let's just move them and do the right things, 100 percent right in January. And January is a very quiet month, so we'll do them [awards] in January."

SABC Sport understands funding was among the issues that have resulted in the postponement of the ceremony but Moloi rejected this, insisting that sponsors are finalised for the event in January.
