Edward Mothibi to focus on shorter distance races, starting with the Fortress Running Series

South Africa’s long-distance runner, Edward Mothibi, is shifting his focus to shorter distances after his impressive performance.

Mothibi, a clerk at Impala Mines in Rustenburg, achieved a remarkable third-place finish at the Comrades Marathon, completing the grueling race in 5 hours, 17 minutes, and 34 seconds just last month.

Not one to shy away from challenges, Mothibi has accepted the opportunity to participate in the Fortress Running Series in Venda this Sunday, a mere couple of weeks after conquering the demanding 87km ultra-marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

His decision to run in the 21.1km event stems from his desire to inspire and motivate young individuals, encouraging them to take running seriously and potentially pursue a career in the sport.

Although Mothibi’s season is far from over, with plans to participate in the Cape Town Sanlam Marathon in September, he presently seeks to engage in a shorter race as part of his recovery from the physically demanding Comrades Marathon.

“The plan is to participate in two or three major races annually, alongside a couple of shorter distance events. My upcoming focus is on the Cape Town Marathon in September, which will mark the culmination of my year. As a nation, we are making great strides in the realm of shorter distances, including the 10km, 21.1km, cross country, and track and field disciplines,”

“I have a message for the aspiring young runners out there: Start from the ground up and gradually progress. To become a successful long-distance runner, it is crucial, to begin with, cross-country, track, and shorter-distance races.

I am heading to Venda with the intention of mentoring and inspiring these young individuals. For me it’s not about the monetary aspect: I long to witness a talented and skilled next generation of runners emerge,” said the athlete from the Nedbank Running Club.

Mothibi expressed that shorter-distance races are primarily focused on speed, whereas longer-distance races demand endurance. He proudly claimed to possess both attributes within his body. His aspirations included enjoying the vibrant atmosphere in Venda and aiming for a podium finish, with the ultimate goal of returning to his home in North West Province with a coveted goal medal.
