Iga Swiatek urged to stay positive by tennis legend Martina Navratilova

Retired legend Martina Navratilova has urged Iga Swiatek to maintain a positive mindset and not let her frustrations get the better of her if she is to regain her title-winning form.

Iga Swiatek will need to maintain a positive mindset and not let her frustrations get the better of her if she is to regain her title-winning form, according to Martina Navratilova.

Five-time Grand Slam winner Switek has not won a trophy since she successfully defended her crown at Roland Garros last June while she also hasn't reached any finals since that glorious day in Paris.

However, she has made a couple of semi-final appearances at the Australian Open, Qatar Open and last week's Indian Wells Open.

There were signs of a return to form at Indian Wells before she lost in three sets against Mirra Andreeva, but there were also moments of frustration.

The Pole smashed a ball from a ball kid into the ground and it nearly hit the youngster. She apologised, but still came in for some criticism from tennis fans.

That incident came just a few weeks after she angrily threw her racket into the ground during her defeat to Jelena Ostepanko in Doha.

In an interview with wtatennis.com, former world No. 1 Navratilova was asked "should we be concerned" about the Pole's lack of titles this year and the fact that she has "lost her composure a few times this year".

"She showed moments of frustration and directed some of it toward her team," the 18-time Grand Slam winner replied. "While it's unclear what was being said, she'll need to manage those emotions better, as she can be highly agitated at times.

"She seems to be struggling with confidence, which can lead to frustration when things don't go her way. Her game is still there, but maintaining a positive mindset will be key.

"But let's not forget, she has been the most successful player overall for the past few years and has won this event."

The Miami Open is up next and Swiatek won the tournament Open in 2022 while she lost in the lost in the fourth round.

The Pole has also recently issued a lengthy statement about her recent struggles on court as well as off court.

The five-time Grand Slam admitted that her positive drug test in August 2024 has had a major impact on her psychologically while she also hit back at those who have labelled her "immature or hysterical" after previously accusing her of being "a robot".

"When I'm highly focused and don't show many emotions on court, I'm called a robot, my attitude labelled as inhuman. Now that I'm more expressive, showing feelings or struggling internally, I'm suddenly labelled immature or hysterical," she wrote.

"That's not a healthy standard - especially considering that just six months ago, I felt my career was hanging by a thread, spent three weeks crying daily, and didn't want to step on the court. Today, after everything I've been through, I'm still processing and coming to terms with those experiences.
