26th February 2025
Originally scheduled for 31 May, the elections were postponed because Athletics South Africa (ASA) will be electing its new board in Johannesburg on the same day.
Mkasi explained that the delay is also due to KZNA’s financial audit, which must be completed before they can proceed with the elections.
"Our date was the 31st of May because that's the earliest that our auditors said the audit and financial statements will be ready. All along we knew ASA was on the 24th so it was never a problem," said Mkasi.
Mkasi explained that it's not unusual for a province to hold its elections after those of ASA.
He stated in an interview with the national broadcaster that KZNA has not breached the ASA constitution and is fully within its rights to hold the elections later this year.
"No, we follow our own process, the provincial constitution. Our constitution says QGM or AGM, well QGM every four years, AGM within six months of the financial year-end,” he added.
“So, our financial year is the 31st of December, so, six months then ends in the end of June. So, we can have our AGM, QGM, anytime within that period as far as we are aware.
“Not our constitution, not ASA's constitution what we need to do as a country is to realign to the global calendar again. We allowed the calendar to be thrown off after Covid and we never realigned.
“So, effectively all the boards that were elected in 2021 should have been for three or alternatively the next boards that are coming now to realign must be for three years. So, that we are aligned to the global calendar of World Athletics."
