Viwe Jingqi vows to elevate her performance this season

South African women’s 100m champion Viwe Jingqi kicked off her campaign with an impressive victory at the Athletics South Africa Grand Prix Continental Tour Challenger at the University of Johannesburg, clocking 11.32 seconds.

Jingqi finished ahead of Vosloo Leonette (11.54) and former 200m national champion Tamzin Thomas (11.58).

Speaking to SABC Sport, she expressed her commitment to becoming a stronger and more competitive athlete this year.

"A lot better mentally to be honest, last year I think I put too much pressure on myself but this year I'm patient with myself and I'm taking everything slowly and I see it's coming together,” Jingqi said.

“You know coaches, the pressure is always there, I think more than anything they want what's best for us and I think I don't see my potential and he's always telling me all the time that you can do better than what you do right now.

“Off season, he's just been on my neck the whole time, he's like next year, World Champs, I don't wanna hear anything but it helped I think, this was a way of stepping up and introducing myself again."

Despite securing a victory, the Eastern Cape-born sprinter was not happy with her performance at the lively UJ Athletics Stadium.

She felt she could have delivered a stronger race and clocked a faster time.

"Honestly speaking that wasn't the best race ever but I think it's reassurance to me as well. The start wasn't as good as I wanted it to be but I think the transition phase, everything was just perfect.

"So, I think the only thing we need to work on is the start and everything else is gonna work together," she added.

The 20-year-old sprinter who trains alongside Bradley Nkoana and Benjamin Richardson in Potchefstroom, feels she faces little competition in the 100m event.

She is eager to challenge herself against faster athletes.

"I will be honest with you, it's not as much pressure in the 100m. I think what’s more exciting is the 200m, I see the ladies are running 22s here and I think it's gonna be a way of helping me also be more consistent in 200m and get a better time as well but I'm not as excited for the 100m, I'm more excited for the 200m because I see there's more competition there."
