Blitzboks earn back to back wins to kickoff Sevens weekend Down Under

The Springbok Sevens started their HSBC SVNS Perth campaign on a strong note by winning their opening two Pool A matches at HBF Park on Friday.

The Blitzboks outplayed Canada 24-7 in their opening match and then outmanoeuvred Spain in their second match 21-14.

They will next face HSBC SVNS log leaders, Argentina, in their final pool match on Saturday 06h38 (SA time).

Blitzbok captain Selvyn Davids proved hugely influential on the first day, scoring a brace against Canada and another against Spain, while there was a popular try on debut for Tristan Leyds against the North American side.

Against Canada, Davids scored from a counterattack after a good opening spell by the men in red. They held the ball for more than a minute, but conceded a turnover and the Blitzbok talisman dummied his way from the halfway line to score.

Canada took the lead shortly after, following a poor clearance kick from the Blitzboks as their defence was found wanting. A successful conversion gave Canada a 7-5 lead.

That was wiped out by Quewin Nortje, who stepped inside two defenders to score for a 10-7 lead at the break.

Davids, who instigated the Nortje try with a delightful foot pass, opened the scoring in the second half after the winger won a good turnover.

Leyds scored shortly after he took the field two minutes from time, his try pushing the Blitzboks into a comfortable margin.

In their second game, Spain scored first against South Africa. Zain Davids was yellow-carded for illegal play and with only six men to defend, the Spanish found the gap needed to score after two minutes.

Ronald Brown ran a nice line on Nortje's inside to open the scoring for South Africa, before the growing presence of the young winger was rewarded when he scored to give the Blitzboks the lead.

The second half was even, but Selvyn Davids still had time to stamp his authority on the match.
