Bulls heroes relive final moments of memorable Leinster victory

Bulls prop Mornay Smith and hero David Kriel recounted the final moments that resulted in their last-gasp one-point victory over Irish giants Leinster on Saturday.

The perennial United Rugby Championship table-toppers Leinster were in the lead when the hooter went at Loftus Versveld this past weekend. Leinster were feeding the final scrum of the game but the Bulls' forward pack had other ideas, earning a decisive scrum penalty that gave Kriel the opportunity to kick the winning points in the 84th minute, which he obliged.

Speaking to the press in the wake of handing Leinster their first defeat of their URC campaign, Smith described how the comeback unfolded.

"[Johan Grobbelaar] had just left the field and Akker [van der Merwe] came back on," said Smith, who came off the bench in 52nd minute.

"The scrum was reset three or four times, and we told each other to keep building, keep going, keep composed, even if the scrum was going down. We stuck to our guns and it came off.

"I was privileged to be on the field then and to be part of that moment. I had the whole pack with me, so hats off to them. Without them, and Jan-Hendrik on the other side and Akker next to me, there aren't moments like this."

Kriel hailed the fighting spirit of the Bulls, who scored eight points in the dying embers of the titanic clash to edge Leinster 21-20.

"My previous kick [the attempted conversion of Grobbelaar's 71st minute try] struck the upright," said the utility back.

"I realised that I shouldn't think too much. As I stepped back for that last kick I just said to myself: 'You've done thousands of kicks like this before; just do what you always do'. And then the kick went over!

"The big thing is, as a group we were hungry, we were desperate and it showed tonight. When things got tough and we were behind, and it looked like Leinster were getting the upper hand, we didn't go back into our shell. We simply kept knocking on the door."
