Bulls overcome Bayonne in France to reach EPCR Challenge Cup quarterfinals

The Bulls stormed into the EPCR Challenge Cup quarterfinals for the first time after a 32-22 victory over Bayonne in France on Saturday.

Jakes White's charges scored four tries while flyhalf Keagan Johannes kicked seven points as the visitors held a 15-8 lead at the halftime break.

The visitors' two first-half five-pointers came courtesy from right winger Sergeal Petersen and lock Reinhardt Ludwig while Johannes succeeded with penalty and conversion.

Bayonne remained in touch on the scoreboard at the interval after Federico Mori went over for a try while scrumhalf Baptiste Germain slotted a penalty.

The Bulls extended their lead in the second half when outside centre David Kriel soared over the whitewash and Johannes added the extras from the kicking tee.

Remi Bourdeau made sure the hosts were still in the contest with a try while flyhalf Tom Spring converted to reduce the deficit to seven points.

The Bulls were then reduced to 14 men when hooker Akker van der Merwe received a yellow card for a high tackle but they navigated the numerical disadvantage as flanker Marco van Staden scored the their fourth try.

Spring scored a try close to full-time to ensure a nervous finish but the Bulls converted a penalty through replacement Johan Goosen to seal contest.

White and his charges will now prepare for a last-eight showdown against Scottish outfit Edinburgh away next week.
