The union had a 10-game losing streak in all competitions, which led to their elimination from the Champions Cup and the demotion of Currie Cup coach Edgar Marutlulle last month.
However, since the beginning of April, they have won three consecutive games – two in the Currie Cup and the other in the United Rugby Championship.
Simelane says those defeats have been crucial in allowing them to go through each performance with a fine-tooth comb.
"We always try to motivate each other to work harder and focus more on our details, and the smaller things that we usually don't focus on when we're on a high," explained Simelane.
"For example, we'll play a game and get a lot wrong, but just because we got the victory, we don't necessarily put as much effort into what we got wrong there.
"But when you start losing games, there's actually a lot of effort and detail in the reviews of the game, so we just had to motivate each other and make sure we take care of the smaller details.
"And, in saying that, we'll do that week in and week out, and the more you lose, the more you just feel like you're not tipping over, but the focus was just for us to carry on knocking the door, and eventually we knew it would open."
