The nippy No.9 has been out of action since November 2022, when his Achilles snapped while playing for New Zealand against England. The 80-test veteran has stood the test of time, competing with the likes of Aaron Smith and Piri Weepu for the the coveted scrumhalf jersey.
Now, the likes of the talented Cam Roigard are also forcing All Black selectors to make difficult decsions.
Perenara only returned to Super Rugby in March, but has made his presence felt on the park for his beloved Hurricanes. The 32-year-old has notched up six tries in the nine games since his return, passing teammate Julian Savea.for the all-time Super Rugby record, which stands at 64 tries.
"It speaks volumes for his mindset with the way he trains, after back-to-back Achilles injuries," Shields told AFP.
"Most people would be close to calling it quits. He has put in a lot of hard work and its why he is back playing at this level and is the top try-scorer."
All Blacks coach Scott Robertson will announce his first squad in June ahead of England's two match tour.
