Two Springbok veterans cleared to face Australia in Rugby Championship

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus confirmed that veterans Pieter-Steph du Toit and Steven Kitshoff will be ready for the first Test of the Rugby Championship.

There are several Bok sidelines with injuries at the moment, including Damian Willemse, Canan Moodie, Franco Mostert and Malcolm Marx. In addition, Jasper Wiese is still serving out his ban for the red card he received at Leicester. The barnstorming No.8 is not available for the next two Tests.

While depth is certainly not the issue in South African rugby at the moment, Erasmus offered some good news in terms of returning players. The Boks next run out against Australia in Brisbane on 10 August and they are set to welcome back at least two stalwarts in du Toit and Kitshoff.

"Jasper must still come back, Damian Willemse must still come back, Pieter-Steph du Toit is cleared, Steven Kitshoff is cleared, and it looks like Malcolm Marx can play the second Australia game," Erasmus told the press this past weekend.

"So we will have to juggle a few things. There are lots of players that can play for the Springboks.

"Some [of the youngsters] will be integrated slowly and some might tour Australia. But they might not play against the All Blacks and then we have Argentina [September 21] at the end. So we've got a plan."

Erasmus is set to announce his 2024 Rugby Championship squad on Tuesday.
