URC: Bulls snatch dramatic victory against Leinster after last-gasp penalty

David Kriel slotted a penalty after the full-time hooter to help the Bulls snatch a dramatic 21-20 victory over Leinster in their United Rugby Championship clash (URC) at Loftus.

The home team would have thought they had squandered a potential victory when wing Sebastian De Klerk was shown a red card with five minutes of the contest remaining.

The Irish team then went up-field and Ross Byrne slotted a penalty of his own to put his side 20-18 ahead with one minute left to play, but the 14-man Bulls won a scrum penalty and Kriel sealed the win.

The hosts did well to fight back when they were 17-6 behind in the second half and gained the lead after being awarded a penalty try then another five-pointer by replacement forward Johan Grobbelaar.

Leinster had dominated the early stages of the contest and scored two tries through Jordie Barrett and then early in the second half wing Andrew Osborne also went over for a five-pointer.

The Bulls also added two penalties through fly-half Keagan Johannes while Byrne was successful with two conversions and two penalties for the Irish outift.

The victory lifts the Bulls back up to third place in the URC standings while Leinster remain first, nine points clear of Glasgow Warriors.

It also ends the Irish giants run of 12 straight URC victories, marking the first defeat of the season in all competitions.

The Bulls will host Italian side Zebre at Loftus next week while Leinster travel to Durban to take on the Sharks on their South African tour.
