The Soweto giants on Friday confirmed the signing of the talisman on a three-year contract from Petro de Luanda, where Conçalves feels the attacker was getting too comfortable as one of the popular figures.
Following his switch, the coach told SABC Sport what he expects of Gilberto in the PSL.
"Orlando is a very good team in Africa, with very good conditions and facilities, and I guess it could be a step forward for Gilberto," said Conçalves.
"I think he needed to go abroad to grow himself, personally. He has a lot of skills that will surely help Orlando Pirates, and I believe he will be a great and key player for them."
Conçalves added that, without any distractions, the 23-year-old could easily be the best player in the DStv Premiership.
"But it's very important for Gilberto to work and keep focussed on the future because he's also an important player for us," he added.
"But he must really focus on the field, on the work, and if everybody gets that environment for Gilberto, I don't know what's – he could be one of the best ones in the next season here in South Africa."
The Angola mentor also emphasised the significance of Pirates playing in the CAF Champions League – a stage Gilberto is already used to.
"Maybe Orlando are preparing a good team to achieve that level, so I hope they achieve that [progressing in the Champions League] because it's important to play international matches," said Conçalves.
"That level pushes everybody, especially the players, so maybe [they need] one season to work on that, but I don't know what happens in the club's mindset.
"But, for sure, they want to achieve that level of competitiveness, and it will be very important for Gilberto too."
