Zwane insists Kaizer Chiefs are still in the DStv Prem title race

Answering questions at the club’s Village in Naturena earlier today, Zwane, whose side is currently fourth on the log and 10 points behind the runaway log leaders after 14 matches played, disputes claims by Swallows coach Ernst Middendorp that the Brazilians should be handed the title already. 

It’s still not clear what Chiefs’ main objectives are for the 2022/23 season, but Zwane insists they are still in the race as well.

"There's still 16 games to play, but I will concur with Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Coach Rulani, who said the league has never been won in January," defended Zwane.

"Our focus right now is to look at ourselves, where we can improve. As much as we are trying to kill two or three birds with one stone, the fact is we need to know what it is we want to achieve first.

"So far so good, and we don't want to split our focus, that said, we take one game at a time and every game we will play for maximum points.

"We just hope that all the remaining games we'll be able to grind the results and be up there to compete with the best so far because, look at SuperSport [United], they are doing well, look at Richards Bay, they are doing well, and Mamelodi Sundowns are leading.

"So, it's never going to be an easy one but I believe it's going to go down to the wire."

Chiefs will face Sundowns on 21 January and 'Mangethe' believes that, if they can continue with their current momentum of five wins from their last seven matches, they can mount a serious challenge for the league title race.

"Automatically, if we win most of our games, we'll be up there competing. So, that's key for us, but at the same time we don't have to lose ourselves, we must have our identity," he added.

"Our identity will obviously make our life easy, for the young boys from the development and also the players that are new in the setup, because we'll have a way of trying to – actually, not trying, but a way of winning these games."
