Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann eyes long-awaited Copa del Rey glory

Antoine Griezmann has long dreamt of winning La Liga or the Champions League, but Atletico Madrid's French forward remains determined to add a major trophy to his collection before potentially leaving the club this summer.

Griezmann has already won silverware with Atletico, lifting the Spanish Super Cup in 2014, as well as the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018.

However, Champions League glory slipped through his grasp in 2016, when Diego Simeone's side lost to Real Madrid in the final. He has also twice rejoined Atletico immediately after their league title triumphs in 2014 and 2021.

That hunger for a significant title makes the Copa del Rey an important target. Atletico have not won the competition since their memorable 2013 final victory over Real Madrid, and they have not reached the final since that defining derby.

Their quarter-final clash with Getafe tonight presents an opportunity to move one step closer to ending that drought.

Griezmann has already lifted the Copa del Rey, but with Barcelona. During his two-year spell at Camp Nou, he failed to secure league or European titles but did win the cup in 2021, scoring in the final against Athletic Bilbao.

Now fully focused on Atletico, the 32-year-old has played a key role in their cup run this season, scoring the only goal in their third-round victory over Marbella.

With three goals in his last two matches, he is in top form and determined to lead his side to the final.

Last season, Atletico's cup hopes were crushed by Athletic Bilbao, who knocked them out with a 3-0 win at San Mames. Griezmann was forced to watch from the stands, having suffered an ankle injury in the Champions League against Inter Milan.

This time, with no injury concerns, he aims to make the difference on the pitch and guide Atletico to long-awaited Copa del Rey success.
