The 25-year-old Hungary international has penned a deal until 30 June 2027.
"Attila is a type of player who combines uncompromising hard tackling, enormous aerial prowess and unbelievable mentality. These are decisive components that have been embodied at our club in the recent past by players like Benjamin Hübner and Ermin BiÄakÄiÄ. But as we know, both of them are no longer part of our squad," said TSG managing director Alexander Rosen.
"It was therefore important for us to bring this special type of player to TSG once again. This transfer will significantly increase the level of competition within the team," Rosen continued, adding: "Our clear objective is to continue to stabilise our defence and Attilia has already proven his qualities on the international stage. In addition, the fans can look forward to a top guy who possesses great charisma."
"I had several options for my sporting future but I consciously decided to join TSG Hoffenheim. I absolutely wanted to play in the Bundesliga and am convinced this is the right step for me," said Attila Szalai, who was given insights into the club and, consequently, important decision-making assistance from his namesake and compatriot, ex-Hoffenheim player Adam Szalai.
"I've of course asked my former national team captain Adam about the club in recent weeks. He has only told me good things about TSG. I am highly motivated, want to contribute fully from day one here at TSG and help the team have a more successful season," the 1.92-metre-tall defender said of his short and medium-term goals.
Attila Szalai came through the youth ranks at Rapid Vienna. He has spent the past three years playing for Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbahçe, where he was an undisputed first-team regular.
During his time with the tradition-steeped club based on the banks of the Bosphorus, the 25-year-old central defender made 84 appearances (six goals) in the league and played 14 matches in the Europa League, six in Europa League qualifying, two games in the Conference League and nine ties in the Turkish Cup.
Last season, Szalai helped Fenerbahçe to win the Turkish Cup. The defensive specialist has so far made 35 appearances for the Hungary national team. Szalai will also wear the shirt number 41 in Hoffenheim.
